An Introduction to Hot Tub Dimensions
Although hot tubs come in many different shapes and sizes, square hot tubs are probably the most common nowadays. The average hot tub size is likely somewhere between 7 and 8 square feet. Depending on the hot tub size and seating configuration, hot tubs can usually accommodate 2-7 people comfortably. We’ll take a closer look at dimensions in the sections below.
Hot Tub Sizes: Important Considerations
Looking at hot tub dimensions is important, but there are other key factors to consider when deciding what size hot tub you want to purchase:
- How much space do you have available? Make sure you have enough space to not only accommodate the hot tub, but also to transport it and install it.
- How many people will use the hot tub regularly?
- What kind of seating options do you want included? There are loveseats, reclined backrest seats, and many different types of massage seats available.
- What’s your budget? You can usually expect to pay more for larger hot tubs.
- How important is energy efficiency to you? Larger hot tubs are typically less efficient than smaller tubs, though this also depends on the quality of the hot tub you purchase.
- Have you considered whether a swim spa might better suit your needs? Swim spas tend to be larger than hot tubs, with more room to socialize and/or exercise.

Tips About Hot Tub Dimensions from the Pros
If you’re looking for even more space, you may want to consider a swim spa instead of a hot tub. A swim spa is the best of both worlds; a great solution for those who can’t decide between a hot tub and a pool. Check out our article on swim spas vs pools to dive into the many benefits of swim spas!
Another pro tip: Before your new hot tub or swim spa is delivered, we suggest measuring out the path your hot tub will travel to its final spot. Hot tubs are delivered on their side using a specialized cart. To ensure smooth delivery, you should make sure that you have at least a 42” wide path throughout with a clearance of at least 8’.
